I need to start by saying that we are an agent for Pfaff Sewing Machines, but that this is not going to be a ‘fluff piece’ I want to write an honest review of this sewing machine.
The Pfaff Quilt Amibition 630 is one of the newer sewing machines in the Pfaff range. I think it is fair to say that this machine is not aimed at the novice sewer (although it is very easy to use). This machine is aimed at the dedicated, or improving sewer.
Although this machine has the word ‘Quilt’ in it’s name, don’t let that put you off if you are a dressmaker. The Quilt Ambition 630 is actually a great all rounder. Yes, it comes with a freemotion foot and a 1/4″ foot as standard (which is a great addition by the way), it also has seven buttonholes and a range of utility stitches for dressmaking. This machine is a great all-rounder.
The main features of the Pfaff Quilt Ambition 630 are:
- 201 Stitches
- Colour Touch Screen
- IDT (basically a built in walking foot for flat seams and to reduce layers of fabric moving against each other)
- Needle Up/Down
- Mirror Image of Stitches
- Elongation ofDecorative Stitches
- Twin Needle Program / Stitch Width Safety (means it will be a lot harder to break a needle by accident)
- Thread Snips
- Two Fonts (note – one of these is the Cyrillic alphabet)
- Automatic Thread Tension (depending on the stitch, your machine will adjust the tension to ensure a good stitch)
- 29 Needle Positions
- Seven One-Step Buttonholes
- Free-Motion Sewing
- Sequencing and Storage of Favourite Stitches
- Immediate Tie-Off
- Built-In Needle Threader
- Start/Stop Button
- LED Illuminated Workspace (200mm – larger than on standard size sewing machines)
- Bobbin Winding from the Needle (we did think this was a gimmick to begin with but can see the point of winding thread to finish off a project when you are already threaded up)
So (Sew?) how does the Quilt Ambition 630 actually sew? It’s very impressive actually. Follow the information on the touchscreen and you will be using the right presser foot, the machine will have the right tension, you will know if you need to use stabiliser and if the feed dogs need to be dropped. The safety features you can turn on will mean that you will not break your needle if you try to use the wrong stitch. The IDT will mean you have flat seams and a great finish to your stitching. You can set the overall speed of your sewing and set the machine to produce the neatest stitch off you will ever see. Using the thread snips means you can just pull the sewing away from the machine.
The Quilt Ambition 630 has 201 stitches, this includes a large number of decorative stitches. Mr More Sewing sometimes wonders if these stitches are just gimmicks and to be honest, 95% of the time a good straight stitch and zig zag are all you need. However these decorative stitches, which you can flip and/or reverse, along with the ability to adjust the size and stitch density actually make them a great choice to embellish your crafting, patchwork or dressmaking project.
No sewing machine is perfect so what did we not like so much. Not a lot overall, The symbols on the touch screen took a little getting used to and you have to make sure you touch the right tab to get to the settings you want. After a couple of hours though, we had totally got it. Cosmetically, some people might not like the dark facias on the machine (we do like them however!).
Overall, the Pfaff Quilt Ambition 630 is a wonderful sewing machine for the serious sewer whether they are into patchworking, crafting or dressmaking (or all three!). It has a great build quality, produces a great finish for your sewing with a bunch of great, and useful, features. On top of that, we think it is one of the best looking and stylish machines on the market.
Enjoy More Sewing!
